Ubuntu

The series is titled “Ubuntu,” which means “humanity” and “love for one’s neighbor” in Zulu and Xhosa. I am drawing on the philosophy of reconciliation upon which Nelson Mandela based his work in post-apartheid South Africa. That is why the colors and geometric shapes I use allude to the South African flag, while deviating slightly from it and also depicting a rainbow nation. All the images in the series feature the same colors, but the rhythms of the overlapping geometric shapes vary. In this way, they form a single, cohesive whole.
